AFCON 2027 will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. However, in Kigali, the ambition is clear: ensure that the benefits of African football’s premier event extend beyond the three host nations.
During a sports economy forum, representatives from PAMOJA—the entity tasked with coordinating preparations—highlighted the possibility for Rwanda to host national teams for training camps, welcome fans, and organize tournament-related events. This opportunity remains open even if Rwanda’s national team does not qualify for the tournament.
The stakes extend well beyond match days. Hospitality, transportation, catering, youth development, infrastructure, and sports tourism are all positioned to benefit from the momentum generated by the competition. Kigali is relying on its high-quality facilities, accommodation capacity, and strategic location in the Great Lakes region.
Discussions also emphasized the tournament’s long-term legacy. The goal is to translate the attention surrounding AFCON into sustainable investments, job creation, and opportunities for young people, rather than limiting the impact to the few weeks of competition. As the first edition co-hosted by three East African nations, AFCON 2027 is presented as a prime opportunity to foster regional integration through sports and economic cooperation.
