Civil Society in Congo Central say Fifteen are dead and eight seriously injured, including two police officers after clashes between police and suspected members of a religious sect in Songololo, Congo Central Province.

The violence broke out early Monday in Songololo, where gunfire could be heard in several neighborhoods. The exact circumstances of these incidents remain to be elucidated.

However, according to Raymond TONA TONA, president of the civil society of Songololo, “it’s at 3 am of this Wednesday April 22 that the members of the religious sect Bundu Dia Kongo who returned from a prayer , were reportedly surprised by the police.”

Other sources say that “the Bundu Dia Kongo members gathered in a house of one of theirs members for prayer at KM5, a district of Songololo, were surprised by the police. The scuffles between supporters of Zacharie Badiengila alias Ne Muanda Nsemi lasted nearly two hours, left fifteen dead”.

According to a police source, “BDK members were preparing to attack this April 22, the residence of the administrator of the Songololo territory, who according to the same source is a non-native of the province”. “The attack by BDK members also targeted all non-native agents working in the Lufu cross-border market.”
