Article Body Opposition demonstrations took place across several cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Kinshasa, to protest proposed changes to the constitution. The national day of action was called by the C64 coalition, which brings together several opposition parties. Opponents argue that the planned reform could clear the way for a third term for President Félix Tshisekedi, who was elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. Authorities have not presented the reform as having taken effect.

Kinshasa: Tear Gas and Heightened Tensions In the capital, the demonstration got underway after midday, with thousands of participants escorted by police along Lumumba Boulevard. Tensions flared when barricades blocked the procession’s path, prompting police to fire tear gas, according to reports from Actualite.cd. A day prior, the National Human Rights Commission had called for peaceful democratic expression without confrontation.

Lubumbashi, Uvira, and Other Regions In Lubumbashi, the planned march was prevented from taking place following a ban by local authorities. Opposition figures reported injuries and detentions among their supporters, while police stated that officers were deployed to maintain public order.

In Uvira, police dispersed crowds gathered for the demonstration, leading to at least four arrests, according to details gathered by Actualite.cd. Security deployments, dispersals, and arrests were also reported in Bandundu, Kikwit, Kisangani, and Mbandaka.

A Tense Political Climate The nationwide mobilization comes at a time when the eastern region of the country remains heavily impacted by the M23 conflict and an ongoing humanitarian crisis. On September 13, President Tshisekedi signed an ordinance establishing a committee tasked with preparing a national dialogue—a step rejected by sections of the opposition.
